Mary Catherine is a writer and cultural anthropologist, born in 1939. Currently living at Summerhill, with homes in Hancock, NH and Cambridge, MA. She has been a visiting scholar at the Sloan Center on Aging & Work at Boston College.
She has written many books and articles, lectured across the country and abroad, taught at several prestigious New England colleges and in the Philippines and Iran.
Bateson's most recent book, Composing a Further Life: The Age of Active Wisdom, discusses the contributions and improvisations of engaged older adults. Written to raise consciousness of the changing life cycle and to encourage older adults to clam a voice for the future, to extend American ideals and values and to protect ecological viability.
